11 men against the world; beer advertising at its best

I’ve tried to write more about this than is here but there’s just nothing more that I can write which isn’t said by watching it. I think this advert is completely brilliant. It’s so good that at the end, when I finally see who is behind it, I just want to drink the pint that comes up on screen. I think it’s incredibly successful in lifting national pride as well as pushing their brand forward. Fantastic.

Does it make you want to drink that pint at the end? If you are in a pub and there's no decent cask beer on, what will you be drinking? I now know what my first choice will be. (to see the video in full widescreen look here)

  2. If I was English, proba... I mean, maybe. But in all honesty, no, those kinda ads that are supposed to appeal to national identity (regardless of what country, even my own) actually turn me off :)

  3. Gripping stuff Dredge. Good to see Pierce (favourite England player of all time) and Bobby (North East Legend). But to be honest it doesn't make me want to drink Carlsberg.

  4. Jingo doesn't appeal as much as tongue-in-cheek. The old "if-Carlsberg-did-pub-teams" one was better.

Still, Psycho and the Two Bobby's will get us all going, no doubt.

  5. You can't beat the spitfire adverts if you ask me ;-)

  6. Any advert with Jackie Charlton in it is worth it's salt, but...

As a football fan, I'm not bowled over by this. It starts so well, and then it gradually gets worse and worse. That female sailor. That bloody rugby coach. Bobby Robson and the ghost of Bobby Moore. Shameful, shameful stuff.

But more than anything, despite a start that looks like it will, it doesn't pick up on the real spirit of football like any of the Nike ads (e.g. Parklife or the Arsenal sub). It smacks of plastic passion, like the new Adidas ad which puts Beckham next to N_Dubz. It just feels, fake. It doesn't get under the skin of football, of community, of desire to win.

I find it patronising to be honest, which is a shame. Cos Jackie Charlton's in it, and for him I'd play my bleedin' socks off.

    Guiness please.

  9. I have to agree with Mark (R-A-R) there - it started off well but just got far too schmaltzy towards the end. And Carlsberg... Danish, right? Since when have the Danes been huge England fans, anyway?

And I'll be watching most of the England games at home, I expect. The atmosphere's not the same, but the beer's always guaranteed to be good... :)

  10. I have my eyes on the work projector throughout June. I can't afford a new telly but I need something a little bigger. 2 games a day for a month, plus beer. Heaven is a place on Earth (as long as I don't see this advert again!)

  11. On reflection, I think I really would have clicked with this advert when I was 17...but not now. In fact it's a real moment of clarify watching it now, and realising how different a person I am now (even though I swear it can't be 9 years since I was 17...!)
